French Preview of Pirates! - (Pirates)
Saturday, 30.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

The French fansite, La taverne du pirate, has put up a 5-page preview of Sid Meier's Pirates!.

It's not based on the beta the other three fansites previewed from, so perhaps there's something new there :) - For one thing there is a screenshot confirming the various starting ages, skills and difficulty levels. As I don't know any french, I can't really tell you much about the interview, but you can read it yourself here.

GameSpot with 3 New Movies - (Pirates)
Friday, 29.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Movies are popping in today - this time, Falconer at Cutlass Isle found that GameSpot has posted 3 new gameplay movies. Two of them shows different endings in a duel (one winning, one losing), and the third one shows a cutscene for rescuing what's probably either the governor's daughter or perhaps your long lost sister - who knows! :)

Along with the two other movies I posted earlier, that's FIVE new movies just today - man, something is happening! Isn't it great? :)

New Movie-clips & Sounds - (Pirates)
Thursday, 28.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

I'm happy to present two new movie-clips from Sid Meier's Pirates, along with some cool sounds :)

The first movie shows a little part of a deck-battle, it can be found here, and the second movie shows our captain-hero sitting stuck in the jail, and it can be found here. You can also access the movies from our movies link in the left nav-menu.

And now, over to the sounds - I've made quite a few of them available in our sounds-section, some of the clips are from the speech in Pirates!, and some of them are music-clips.

Enjoy :)

P.S: While I'm at the news-stuff, I recently re-added the search-function here at ATP, so now you can search all news-items ever posted :)

New European Release-date - (Pirates)
Thursday, 28.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Allthough I haven't been able to find any confirmation on this from Atari, the place where I pre-ordered my version of the European Limited Edition, Game.net just sent me a mail telling me the new release date for Europe is November 26th.

Of course, we can never know if that's 100% accurate until it's official by Atari, but since the US version was delayed by 1 week (well, 6 days actually), it would be reasonable to think that the Euro version will have the same delay.

Update on Demo - (Pirates)
Wednesday, 27.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Well, Jeff told us what he knew about a demo in our forum today, here is what he said about that matter:

I know of no demo that will be available before launch. Two possibilities:

- Sometimes overseas they refer to a teaser video as a "demo", shorthand for "non-playable demo", rather than an interactive one.

- Sometime after launch we will probably work with online distributors to provide a time-limited demo of the game, as we've done for several other Atari products. So you might be able to, say, download several hundred MBs of the game (or most of the game) and be able to play it for an hour before you needed to pay to unlock the game. I have no word on the timing or availability of this possibility, and it's not nearly as convenient to download as a more straightforward demo program, but it's really the only way to have a demo of Pirates! because there are no "levels" to split apart from the main game.

And I suppose "overseas" is in Europe (for me, overseas is the US, but oh well..:), which means that PCZone UK either has a non-interactive demo of Pirates!, or - they know something Atari doesn't!

Read more about it here.

Demo After All? - (Pirates)

BLOODUK has read the latest PCZone UK, and on page 152 it says that we can expect a full review and a demo in the next issue.

It's no longer than 4 weeks since Atari said there would be no demo at all in this thread.

Atari Confirms Delay! - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 26.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Jeff Foley from Atari has confirmed what I told you yesterday, the new official release date for Sid Meier's Pirates! is November 22nd, 2004.

I'll do my best, though it sounds like most people already understand the reason. Yes, it's true that there are a lot of big November releases, but I'd put Pirates! up against any of them no problem. In this case, it's a question of preserving the quality of the game. We want to allow as much time as possible for stomping out bugs. It was decided that we'd be better off taking a few extra weeks to do this before shipping it. Our operations crew has scheduled some overtime/weekend work to compress the time between receiving a gold master and producing finished product, so that we'd only lose a week on the ship date itself and so we'd make it out before Thanksgiving shoppers.

November 22nd is the new official launch date. Limited Edition preorders are still available until then.

The European date will probably be adjusted as well. They don't get the new gold master any sooner than we do, and they'll need to get appropriate translations put into place before they can release it. Fortunately, most of the localization has already been done and is not dependent on the final fixes.

Sid Meier's Pirates Delayed by 1 week! - (Pirates)
Monday, 25.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Update:

From a very liable source I've got it confirmed: Sid Meier's Pirates! is delayed until November 22nd, 2004! Expect to see the online stores change their release-date in near future! It's not known yet if this will affect the European release date (19th) or Australian (26th), but I would assume that the European date would get a few days delay as well.

What does this mean? Well, to me it seems like only one thing, Sid Meier didn't approve that this game would go gold yet! It's not easy to delay a game when a release-date has already been set, lots of money and other interests at stake - so all honor to both Atari and Firaxis for not forcing the release of this game before it's done.

Of course, I would have hoped that it was released November 16th, but I rather want it to be delayed a week (or two) if the game didn't meet the Sid Standard!

Or perhaps, as GullyFoyle says in our forum, it might be because Half-Life 2 is released on November 16th... Who knows!

Rumors about Pirates!-sequel - (Pirates)
Saturday, 23.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

The rumor-control at GameSpot has brought up some interesting stuff about a sequel to Pirates! - SPOnG.com has posted the following:

"In other Firaxis news, the team will also be working on a new Pirates game (Pirates 2, in case you were wondering) and another two titles besides. Whether one of these will be console specific remains to be seen. Mr. Briggs has promised more information in the new year, so expect an update then."

When GameSpot called Firaxis to hear more about this, they replied:

"What are you talking about?" said the spokesperson. "We're still working the Xbox Pirates!"

The rumor is denied as bogus at GameSpot, but who knows if there might be more to it than it seems... SPOnG.com says it's Pirates! 2 - Personally I think they would rather try to make an expansion before they make a sequel, so who knows - maybe we'll see "Sid Meier's Pirates! - Sail the World" next year with multiplayer support? :)

1 up and 1 to go! - ((default))
Thursday, 21.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Falconer from Cutlass Isle has found a new preview from 1UP, which can be viewed here.

There is also a few new screenshots available, and if my eyes don't fool me too much, I'm pretty sure that the graphics looks even better than in screenshots from the beta - especially the land areas, so it's worth a look :)

The Long Awaited Addicted Preview! - (Pirates)
Friday, 15.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Arrrr!

Ever heard about an old game called Pirates! (note the exclamation mark!)? The old, unsinkable classic that even today, almost two decades later, is played by thousands of gamers all over the world.

Well, to sum up short – it was a groundbreaking game at that time (1987), introducing a free, wide open world in a real time setting, an open-ended multi-genre game with roleplaying, action and even strategy elements. You started out by taking control of a ship and a few men, and that was it! The rest was up to you… Swordfighting, ship-battles, land-battles, digging for treasures, finding lost relatives… Ah, those days.

When my eyes heard (as much as eyes can hear) that a remake of one of the greatest games of all times was in development, my heart jumped. My eyes sharpened. My first thought was “YAY!” – my second thought was “I hope it will be as good as the original”. So far, it seems like we are getting more than I hoped for…

But hold on a minute… Did I say unsinkable? Let's find out! It looks like we better prepare for battle, because the remake is firing at us, loaded with 48 cannons!

So, what does this remake have to offer besides some new 3D-graphics? The short answer is: A lot! The long answer: Well, that's gonna take a while, so bottle up – we're going to the Caribbean!

Go read the whole preview here!

Packshot of European Limted Edition - (Pirates)
Saturday, 09.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

This was actually posted in our forum, The Talking Parrot, a couple of days ago.

MadDuck wrote to Atari France and got a picture of the European Limited Edition, which can be viewed here.

It also seems like the European version will include a t-shirt as well, and that the price will be 10€ higher than the regular edition.

This is just gonna be a quick update, thanks Falconer from Cutlass Isle for sending me some news, and thanks to BLOODUK from our own forum as well :)

Cutlass Isle has posted a preview from a beta-testers point-of-view, haven't had the time to read it myself yet - but I've already saved it for later reading! :)

Also, there is a new Pirates!-trailer out now, which I sadly haven't got the connection to download here in Spain, but you can grab it here or here.

And, it also seems that Worthplaying has posted another preview here.

That should be just about it for now - stay tuned :)

More from the Beta-testers! - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 05.10.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Todays update from Spain, and The Talking Parrot:

Jeff has posted more quotes and tales from the beta-testers in our forum. His favourite quote was:

"I get a rush when the dancing gets faster and you close in on the view. It's almost like you get tunnell vision towards the end when you are really zoomed in and all you can see are her arms. And you know you are getting towards the end. If I have gone the whole dance without a stumble, I get pretty anxious for it to end when it gets hectic. The forward, back left back left backe left, forward, back left back left back left sequence at some of the endings leave me pretty nerve wracked. Which I like."
