More Reviews! - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 30.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Cutlass Isle has been digging hard and deep and found two new reviews, this time from Games Domain (8/10), and Hi-Techreviews.com (5/5? - no "total").

As if that wasn't enough, EyeHawk from our forums found a Greek review at Gamesway, where it got the excellent score of 9.1/10.

Anyways, here is a sneak from the Hi-techreview review:

The last item that I found very interesting is the Pirate-O-Pedia which lists every terms and phrase used and the game and explains exactly what it means and where it comes from. This makes the game far more enjoyable and I highly recommend you read all of the entries before playing the game to have a better understanding of what things are. Or at least take the time to check them as you go along.

GameSpot Reviews - 9.2! - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 30.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

GameSpot has just posted their review of Sid Meier's Pirates!, and gave it the excellent score of 9.2, and Editors Choice Award!

When you need to infiltrate a hostile port, you'll encounter the sneaking minigame, which is sort of Pac-Man in reverse. Your goal is to skulk around the mazelike streets of a town, avoiding the town watch. If captured, you'll be thrown into jail, where you'll rot for a few months before they let you go. At the easier difficultly levels, dodging the guards is incredibly easy, but at the harder levels, it's a lot tougher. Thankfully, you have a few moves at your disposal, such as the ability to scale walls, knock out guards from behind, and duck behind bales of hay to hide. The suspense can be high at times, especially when you narrowly weave between several guards.

Thanks EyeHawk for the tip :) - Read the whole review here, or watch the video-review here!

ActionTrip Review! - (Other)
Tuesday, 30.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

ActionTrip has reviewed Sid Meier's Pirates!, and "only" gave it a score of 84%. The review seems to hit the nail on the head a few times though with things that's been brought up in our forum quite a few times already.

Ironically, the fact that this is often such a straight port (of the original, ATP) might prove to be one of the game's biggest downsides. While the fencing and the relation of your duel with the captain to the strength of your crew and the overall result, as well as the cute mini-games were… well, cute back in the day, I got the feeling Firaxis didn't really advance the original idea enough to truly bring it into the new millennium.

Thanks EyeHawk for the tip :) - Read the whole review here!

PCZone UK Review Online! - (Pirates)
Monday, 29.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

A while ago we mentioned that Sid Meier's Pirates! got an 88% score in PCZone UK.

This review has now been published on the internet for reading, so take a look. Please note that the review was based on an unfinished version of the game. Here is a quote:

As the dance progresses it can be tricky to pull off a sequence of moves without stumbling and blowing your chances of getting a shag. Pull off an impressive trot however and she'll giggle with delight, heart pumping with barely concealed lust, and when the dance is over she'll whisk you to the servants' quarters and ride you like a stallion. Or at least that's what I thought would happen when after one particularly lustful waltz I was offered a 'Dutch Rutter'.

GameInformer Hands-On - (Pirates)
Saturday, 27.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

I know, I know... In times like these, you only want pure reviews! Still, GameInformer has posted their hands-on impressions of Sid Meier's Pirates! a few days ago, on the release-date actually. I'm quite surprised it hasn't been picked up by anyone by now, but anyways.

The hands-on is a decent reading of decent lenght, and has a few cool, new screenshots along with some movies - it's definitively worth a look.

Hi, I’m Captain CrapShoes. What? Oh, sorry, I don’t talk like your typical pirate. All that “Arrr” and “Ye” stuff is highly stereotypical and only serves to degrade me and my pirate brethren. We have feelings, you know? Anyway, pleasantries aside, I’m here to walk you through Sid Meier’s Pirates!. The life of a pirate is a cruel and harsh one, fraught with countless perils and dangers. Enemies outnumber allies and unless you want to end up in a premature watery grave, you’d best keep your wits about you. But like any other profession, today’s modern pirate has quite a few resources before him to help not only amass a sizable wealth, but also gain quite a bit of fame and notoriety in the process.

Atari Sells Civilization! - (Other)
Wednesday, 24.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Ok, this is a little bit off the regular news, but it's still interesting. It seems like Atari has sold their rights to the Civilization-franchise for $22.000.000. The buyer is as of yet not known.

The biggest questions are, who will develop Civilization IV? What's happening between Atari and Firaxis - and will Sid Meier be behind it?

An Addicted Interview with Sid Meier! - (Pirates)
Wednesday, 24.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Addicted to Pirates! has been so lucky to do an interview with the God of all games, Sid Meier himself!

Sid Meier has come up with some of the greatest games of all time, such as Railroad Tycoon, Colonization, Alpha Centauri, the Civilization-series, and of course, Sid Meier's Pirates! All of them are games that I myself have played hundreds of hours, each!

Here is a little quote from the interview:

ATP: It’s been 17 years since the original Pirates!, and a *lot* has changed in the gaming industry. So, apart from the technology, what are the biggest differences between making a game 17 years ago, making a game today, and - if you could guess - making a game in 17 years from now?

SM: My fundamental approach to making games has not changed in 17 years…and it won’t over the next 17…which is to find the fun first and then use technology to bring the fun to life in the most rewarding way. The biggest change in the industry is that it takes many more people and a whole lot more money to make games today…players expect a high level of visual entertainment to go along with the gameplay and that takes time, talent and money. It will be interesting to see where the industry is 17 years from now. I think online games will be a much bigger part of the industry.

I would like to thank Sid Meier for spending his own time answering these question, and also Electronic Artists for giving me the chance to write this interview, which you can read by clicking the link in the left menu, or by clicking here! (Update: Link is now working;)

GameSpot Hands-On, Movies & Screens - (Pirates)
Wednesday, 24.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

GameSpot has gotten their retail copy and are working on a review. So far you can read their final hands-on if you can't wait for the full review :)

The game certainly looks sharp. There's an impressive amount of detail in the 3D character models in towns and during combat, and the game's 3D animated map and little galleons and sloops all look convincingly authentic, too. Some spirited, piratey music and believable ambient effects also help make this a lively production.

They've also posted some new movies, along with some screenshots, congrats to GameSpot for not stealing them from ATP this time.

As a sidenote, the users at GameSpot has given the game an average score of 9.5! That's probably one of the highest averages ever seen. The score is based on 73 ratings, it will be interesting to see if it keeps the good rating as more users rate it.

Pirates Reviewed @ IGN: 9.2! - (Pirates)
Saturday, 20.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

IGN has posted the first review for Sid Meier's Pirates! (not counting PCZone UK Review), and gave it the fantastic score of 9.2!!

I've been playing the final version of the game for a few days now and I can barely tear myself away long enough to write the review. Over the past few days I've gone from being the insignificant captain of a small ship to become the most powerful and influential pirate in the Caribbean. Along the way I've sacked towns, hunted down rival pirates, explored for treasure, rescued long lost family members, amassed a vast personal fortune, climbed the ranks of high society, wooed the attractive daughters of wealthy governors, found lost cities and revenged myself on the evil bastard who originally split up my family.

And you still haven't preordered the game??? ;)

Read the whole review here, and be sure to check out their nice new screenies - especially the one with the Ship of the Line!

Thanks PirateTed in our forum for the tip :)

Also, a Dutch Magazine, Power Unlimited, has reviewed Pirates! with the good score of 86 - thanks to Gerrit dn Bak for the tip, which you can read here!

Ok, I know there has been lots of confusion of the release date for Sid Meier's Pirates! outside the US. Official Atari sites has the game listed from Nov 26th to Dec 3rd.

A source at Firaxis says that "it (Sid Meier's Pirates! - ATP) will hit the different countries sometime between November 26 and Dec. 3rd."

So that should sum it all up really - Hopefully you won't have to wait longer than that :)

IGN Pirates - Part 5 (and final) - (Pirates)
Thursday, 18.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

IGN has up til now posted a feature of 8 of the 9 different "real" pirates in Pirates!, and today they write about the last one, Bartholomew Roberts...

Roberts was a fine sailor and natural leader, and when Davis was killed several months later, the men elected him captain. In a very short time Roberts was to prove himself one of the greatest pirates who ever lived.

Then I'm sure someone is gonna ask: "Why only 9 pirates? Why not 10?"

Well, dear reader - The 10th pirate... IS YOU!

Wednesday, 17.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

The fourth part of IGN's feature "Pirates of Pirates!" is published, this time it's about the two pirates Roc Brasiliano and Jack Rackham.

Known as "Calico Jack" for his bright clothing, Rackham cut a dashing figure in the pirate havens of the Caribbean. In New Providence, Bahamas, he won the heart of Anne Bonny, a wild and tempestuous young woman who he dressed as a man and smuggled aboard his ship. Soon afterwards he discovered that yet another woman was aboard his ship, one Mary Read, also disguised as a man. By all accounts the two women were as fierce - or fiercer - than any man aboard his ship, and the women became his trusted lieutenants.

Sid Meier's Pirates! Finally Gold! - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 16.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

In a post at our tavern, The Talking Parrot, Jeff Foley from Atari posted today at 8:59 PM CET that Sid Meier's Pirates! is GOLD!

For those who don't know what this means, the game is finished, they've made the master CDs, which will be copied in millions of copies (hopefully:), ready for an US release November 22nd.

There is one big confusion though, the press-release states that the game will be released November 26th outside US, but all the European Atari-sites says December 3rd, even the online-stores says December 3rd. Why this mix-up? I really don't know...

IGN's Pirates - Part 3 - (Pirates)
Tuesday, 16.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

This time IGN writes about Henry Morgan and L'Olonnais!

Without a doubt, Henry Morgan was the greatest English privateer in the seventeenth century. A bold, ruthless and daring man, Morgan fought England's enemies for over thirty years - and made himself a very wealthy man in the process.

In 1655, at the age of twenty, Morgan volunteered to join an English expedition against the Spanish Caribbean city of Santo Domingo. When that assault failed, the expedition attacked and captured the island of Jamaica, which was virtually undefended at the time.

More Pirates at IGN! - (Pirates)
Saturday, 13.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

IGN has a feature about two other pirates from Pirates! today, this time it's William Kidd and Jean Lafitte.

Jean Lafitte was born sometime around 1778. He and his older brother, Pierre, went to sea at an early age; somewhere off the west coast of Africa the two quarreled with their captain, and began new careers as privateers. An extremely brave, skilled, dashingly-handsome and personable young man, Jean Lafitte quickly earned himself a captaincy. After a good run in the Indian Ocean, the Lafittes moved on to the Caribbean, where they established a base of operations on Grand Terre, an island in the mouth of the Mississippi. Lafitte ran a tidy little criminal empire in the Louisiana bayous. His men ranged far and wide over the Caribbean while he and his brother fenced much of the loot in New Orleans, where they became something akin to folk heroes.

Oiii, I missed something today - but Falconer quickly reminded me of it! :)

IGN has a Pirates! Feature which (features) two of the most notorious pirates ever, Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet.

Born Edward Drummond in England in 1680, the pirate known as "Blackbeard" learned his trade as an English privateer during the War of Spanish Succession. When that war ended in 1714 he drifted into outright piracy, operating up and down the North American East Coast, attacking English shipping and anything else that came within his grasp.

You'll find some screenshots of the pirates there as well :)

A Release Date Story - (Pirates)
Thursday, 11.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

We all know that Sid Meier's Pirates! was delayed from the original US release-date of November 16th, to the new, current US release-date of November 22nd. What has been written less about is the release-dates for the rest of the world.

The status now? Well, we haven't seen any "official" words from Atari on other release-dates. I myself ordered the Limited Edition of Sid Meier's Pirates! from Game.net, and it was originally scheduled for November 19th. I got a mail from them saying the new release date would be November 26th. I assume they got that info from Atari - but it could also be just a wild guess from their side.

Originally, the Euro-version was scheduled for release 3 days after the US-version. If the Euro date indeed is November 26th, then we've only seen a pushback of one day compared to the US date.

However, on the German Atari Site, their release list says the date is December 2nd. Ok, it's a german localized version, so one could expect that it would take a few extra days to get this on the street. On the other hand, it wasn't the original plan - and we didn't see any delay at first compared to the English languaged Euro-version.

Now, I checked the Norwegian Atari Site, and found that the releasedate in Norway (and in the other Nordic countries) is December 3rd. There is no localized language versions for Norway as far as I know, so this might mean that the English Euro-version could in fact be delayed further. In some cases we see special localized version for Scandinavia though, so I'm not saying that there won't be one with Sid Meier's Pirates!.

The Australian Atari Site has the game listed at November 26th, which has been the official release-date in Australia / New Zealand since before the one-week delay of Pirates!, which means this is most likely to change - it's probably not updated yet.

The French Atari Site has the game listed at December 3rd as well, which build up to my theory that the game is further delayed.

Then, when I check the
English Atari Site, the release-list says the date is November 19th. And what's even stranger, it also says that the list was last updated today (Nov 11th).

To sum up, we have many different release-dates from the different Atari sites. I would like to think that Atari's release-date are all official. However, the different sites doesn't seem very coordinated. We have five different release-dates as we speak: Nov 19th, 22nd, 26th and Dec 2nd, 3rd. I'm pretty sure that the first one is not accurate. Also, seeing as the Australian release-date originally was ten days after the US one, I would think that it is about the same now, which makes the Australian date around the French, German and Nordic date: December 2nd / 3rd.

When we think about that both the French, German and the Nordic Atari sites had November 19th first, then November 26th, and now December 2nd / 3rd - it means they've delayed twice. The US / UK version has only been delayed once. This can be a lead to that those version might be further delayed. Not saying that they will, but we should assume that it could be a possibility.

I would like to see more info from Atari on this, why all these different release-dates on the Atari-sites? We've learned not to trust web-shops, but Atari's own release-lists? Again, the only word we've heard is November 22nd, and that the other localized version might be a bit delayed as well.

First Review? - ((default))
Wednesday, 10.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

According to a post over at the Cutlass Isle boards, PC Zone UK has reviewed Sid Meier's Pirates!, and given it a score of 88% - along with the rank "PC Zone Essential".

If the review is really a review, and it's a printed magazine, then it means it probably was made a while ago, a week - maybe two, who knows. And since we know that Sid Meier's Pirates! still hasn't gone gold yet, I'm questioning if this review is at all serious. I know it's common practice to review near-release-version of games, but I'm always very suspicious to those sorts of reviews.

On the other hand, 88% isn't a bad score at all - but who knows, if they have played the retail version they might have found a few things better / tweaked some more, which means that the game perhaps deserved an even better score.

Pirates! Delayed Again? - (Pirates)

Last week, Sid Meier's Pirates! was delayed about a week - now it seems like it's delayed again. According to Atari's own pages, the German (Euro) version won't be available until December 2nd, 2004.

Whew, the interviews are literally popping in nowadays, and this time it's Strategyinformer.com that's done an interview with Firaxis.

SI: Will we be able to assault, conquer and rule cities or will we only be able to pillage them?

Firaxis: Sid completely reinvented land battles for this game with a turn-based system that is incredibly fun. Pirates now come is several varieties (Buccaneers carry guns for ranged combat instead of the cutlasses favored by regular Pirates) and defenses now include cavalry and mobile cannon, along with the usual infantry. Things like height advantages, tree cover and morale will impact the battles. If successful in a land battle you’ll be able to conquer and install a new governor.

Another Interview - (Pirates)
Thursday, 04.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

BLOODUK has found another interview, this time by GameZone.com, and the target is Sid Meier!

How do players command their crew? Do they have direct control over them?

Sid: Players don't command or control your crew directly in all cases. In ship battles, you give general orders for your flagship and your crew carries them out based on their morale, how many crew you have, and the presence of crew specialists. In dueling, your crew fights the enemy crew in the background. Their morale is basically determined by whether they are outnumbered by or outnumber the enemy crew. They're also affected by how well you are doing in your one-on-one duel with the enemy captain. If you do well, they will fight harder, and having them outnumber the enemy crew can help you in your duel. In land battles, you control your troops more directly. Telling them where to move and when to melee or fire from a distance. You can recruit crew in the town taverns or pirate havens. You can also rescue men from the water in ship battles or men might be so impressed by you that they join from a defeated ship while you are plundering it.

Barry Caudill: It would have to be Bart Roberts. How cool is a guy who was one of the most successful pirates of his day if not all time AND he was a snappy dresser too. Even his last moment alive was filled with style. Rather than run away from a bigger, better-armed warship, he decided to fire off one volley just to show he meant business. Unfortunately for him, the warship fired first and he was killed in the first volley - but he went out with style and I'll bet he was well dressed.

You can find it here.

Second off is what seems to me more of a personal interview of Sid Meier, by Gareth Von Kallenbach. It can be found here.

Thanks Falconer from Cutlass Isle for bringing the news :)

German Trailer - (Pirates)
Monday, 01.11.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos

Teach from our own tavern, The Talking Parrot, found a new video from Sid Meier's Pirates! - at least neither of us had seen it before. It's from the German Atari-site, and the promotional text is in German, however that won't matter for this video anyways :)

To watch it yourself, click here, and then click the link right under the four thumbnailed screenshots.
