AFI? What's that?
Well, I'm moving - and it takes about 3-5 weeks to get the new ADSL up and running, so I'm gonna be AFI, Away From Internet... It's gonna be a tough month! Well, maybe I'll do some work on my personal homepage during the offline-period!
Anyways, Maul and Hatjo will be in charge of ATP until I get back - who knows what they will do :) Maybe you will see some more of the new design?
I'll be back... |

| Design & Fansite Kit - (Site) |
| Sunday, 21.03.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos |

As you all know we are working on the re-design for ATP. We put it on hold about 2 months ago - we were going to await the fansite-kit from Firaxis. However, I've tried to get in touch and find out when it will be released (last eta as I know was late February), but haven't gotten any response.
BUT, don't fear my pirate-friends! Nate has just started working on the new design again, based off the released screenies of Pirates!. Hopefully he has enough to work with, and as you have seen at our forum, The Talking Parrot, he has done an excellent job so far.
So, don't worry, be happy! You really have something to look forward to! At the same time we will introduce a new way (well, here at ATP at least) to post news - we will be making longer, better, and more eye-candy articles. We will also reduce the number of categories and links in the navigation system, so it will be way easier to navigate (we hope:)
If you have any suggestions on what to include, feel free to use the feedback-form. |

| More info - (Pirates) |

Reading the articles at gamespot and IGN I have tried to make some more points about what we will see in Pirates!
First of all, Pirates! won't be a realistic game in the sence of all matters of details, more it will be a romantic version of the pirate life. (This of course will make the game much more fun than a realistic game would be in many ways. I mean, how cool is it that the crew catch a deadly diseas and die? Or the governour using you as his political pawn, and after a while decide to kill you! Well actually that would be a bit cool! :)
There will be a "general" story-line, that can help you explore. (Of course this is only there to help you, you can explore and do as you want - it's a free world!) On this notion the IGN article mentions a "Bad villian" type. I want to see black beard as a super bad villian :) The nation you choose influences the way the game is played, say the spanish is very active in the beginning of the game so if you choose the spanish prepaired for a hectic time early on.
Your captain have a speciality you select at the beginning of the game, this means you can be a great swordfighter or a great shipsailer etc.. This feature I really like :) (btw dont challange me for a swordfight)
Land battles! Instead of attacking forts from the sea you can land with troops (ranged or melee) and fight. Really nice feature :)
Indians - use the Indians to get them to weaken the defence of a town and then attack yourself. You get to visit indian settlements and can convince them to set sails with indian war cannoes! If they manage to reach the intended target they will weaken the defence there.
You can have 8 ships in your fleet in the new pirates! game, but upi will only be fighting on one of the ships at a time.
If you want, you can buy old treasure maps, and set sail for a little treasure hunt :)
There will be several different types of ammo: chain shot for the rigging, grape shot for the crews, double shot for the hulls. Maybe more to come.
As in the old Pirates!, you will be able to trade with local merchants, but a nice new thing is that you are now able to install devices your ship! :) You can also upgrade your ships at the shipwright.
Deadly dancing game! Be the perfect gentleman and win prizes or the hand of the lady! Be a dofus and stumble and fall hehe.
There will be some sort of online community component - but no multiplayer. I think that you will be able to compare scores or something in that manner on the pirates! site (This of course is just guessing).
You can't be killed, only imprissoned. Of course, the older you get the worse your skills get. So Pirates! will be a race against time. Much like the real world.
At E3, Firaxis and Atari will reveal great new info (this comes as a shock hehe). |

| IGN on Pirates - VIDEO! - (Pirates) |
| Tuesday, 16.03.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos |
| |
Visiting IGN, I found this article about Sid Meier's Pirates! This is the second preview on Pirates! from big gamesites, a 4-page article which offers a lot more info than the one at GameSpy.
New Info A few new things I took notice of was that you will have several types of ammo (well, we figured this had to come), different types of troops (some armed with rifles, some with swords), Indian interaction, and the way dancing (!) works.
No Multiplayer It is also said in this article that it will be NO MULTIPLAYER!! I'm really sorry to read this... From the early signals of the game at E3 2003, it looked like the game would feature multiplayer...
Oh well, maybe in an expansion called "Sail The World!" ;) (Hey, Firaxis - if you read this - I really think thats a good name for an expansion, remember where you got the idea! :D) -
Anyways, the reason, they say, is that multiplayer simply doens't fit the franchise.
Modding As a positive thing, Firaxis includes "a fair bit of customizability in the game", and hopes for help from the community! We will be there, Firaxis!
Screenshots and Video Nothing new in the IGN screenshot section though. But you should take notice on another thing - this video, which shows the start of a swordfight at a tavern. I must say, the graphics looks even better in motions :)
System Requirements According to this preview, Firaxis aims for the game to be playable at a 1GHz CPU, 128MB RAM, and a GeForce2 or equialent video-card.
If this is true, it's great news for all of those who haven't upgraded their computer in a while - you won't need to! |

I closed the old poll today, the question was: "What do you think is most important for a game like Pirates!?"
57% of the voters answered "Gameplay", while only 8% of the voters answered "Graphics". 16% meant the story was most important, 14% said multiplayer, while only 3% voted for sound & music.
Go to our "old polls" section to view the old polls.
I also put up a new poll, naturally - after viewing the GameSpy screenies of Pirates!. "What do you think of the Pirates!-graphics?" is the question this time.
So, click that voting button! |

| FINALLY! - (Pirates) |
| Monday, 15.03.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By KriFos |
| |
The first new info about Pirates! has been revealed at GameSpy!
GameSpy has in their article posted 3 new screenshots, 1 new render and 1 new drawing from Pirates!.
I have to say, I think the graphics looks really nice, and also pretty funny at the same time - they could have made the game characters and flora look more realistic, but instead they chose to do a more cartoony look - which if I must say, I think fits perfect.
As for new info about the game, first thing to be said is that the game will be like a gigantic sandbox where you will have a ship, and a totally open gameplay, according to Sid Meier.
The economy also plays a part of Pirates!, and along with a "shifting political climate", this game is already meeting my expectations.
But wait, there is more!
According to Sid Meier, the game "is about you being a hero". You create your own story (we knew this!:) - and among the things you will be able to do is:
Sail your own ship, be hunter or the hunted Stop at ports to repair or upgrade your ship, meet the governour (or his daughter;), listen for rumors in the tavern, buy and sell goods - and probably more as the time passes by! Command your ship in sea battles - Sink, Capture, Plunder enemies - or, flee if you can! Use your sword in swordfights, full of special moves and rapid footwork! But watch out that you ain't imprisoned... Then you will have to try to escape! Find or buy old pirate treasure maps to hunt for lost treasures to gain wealth and fortune, and perhaps some special items that you might take advantage of in other areas of the game Attack enemy towns, capture them for glory, wealth and honor!
As in the old Pirates!, most of your options in the towns are taken care of via menus, but that is just a little part of the game. Swordfighting, sea-battles, attacks on cities, treasure hunting, trading, you name it! I doubt we will be bored the first 200 hours of play at least ;)
We all know one of the things the Sid Meier games is famous of, and that is being a game where you "just have to play ONE more turn," and I doubt that Pirates! will be the exception.
You are given a Civilization-style ranking when you choose to retire. You cannot die (maybe our pirate-hero has been drinking of the fountain of youth), but as you grow older, you will be affected by it naturally in all ways. So, when you finally choose to retire, the big question is: Will you, as in the old Pirates!, be given the final moment of doubt? "Do you REALLY want to retire?" "Can you hold out just a couple of years more?" "Are you sure?"
I'm pretty sure!
It also seems like the new Pirates! will only contain the four nations from the old version, Dutch, English, French and Spanish. Some of us had hoped for an extra nation, but looks like that wasn't to be... Well, who knows - the game isn't out yet - might be another year! |

Well, according to a post by Jeff Foley - BA @ Atari - in this thread over at the Crydee boards, they are discussing internally if the old version of Pirates! will be available on the new PC-CD version of Pirates!, or possibly on a Limited-Edition Disc. |

From time to time, I do searches on Google to see how Addicted to Pirates ranks...
Searching for "Sid Meier's Pirates Fansite" brings up ATP as no.1 :) Yay for that...
But, the fun - Searching for "Sid Meier's Pirates", brings up ATP as no.4 on page 2, the place before Firaxis, which is ranked no.5 on page 2 :)
Oh, the fun...
Anyways, seems like Addicted to Pirates! is getting more and more popular - now we only need some more forum activity in The Talking Parrot, which - if I must say - looks better and better for each day :) |

| Pirates Info in March - (Pirates) |
| Thursday, 04.03.04 | Captain's Diary | Log Entry By Hatjo |
| |
Reading on an interesting thread over at the very nice site http://www.civfanatics.com (I'm also a civilization fan), I found Jeff Foley writing that early info about Pirates! will hit the press now in March. This is also confirmed by our earlier post from KriFos, that Computer Games Magazine will publish info on March 9th.
Also the thread discusses if Civilization fans will buy Pirates!, and yes, it seems like a very good proportion of the civilization fans will buy the upcoming pirate-game. This looks like good news for every pirate-game fan, because if you know how well Civilization did it on the sale charts (say civ 3 for example), you know the next pirate-game will sell good :)
Lastly but not least, Jeff repeats that the new pirate-game will stay true to the originals core gameplay but will expand with many new ideas on the already good game. |
